Ione was born on September 29, 1910 delivered by her grandfather, Dr. Thomas Still, on their family ranch located between Carrisa Plains and Pozo, East San Luis Obispo County, California where her family settled this ranchland before statehood.
Ione was second of five children born to John and Burma (Still) MacLean. Her parents named Ione after the Island of Ione in Scotland; where her father originated.
From her early childhood, a natural born artist, Ione sketched and painted life she experienced on the ranch and surrounding remote country--horses and wild life. Born a self-taught gifted artist, she was fortunate to meet, become friends and receive personal instruction from Tex Moore, the official cowboy artist of Texas. In the 1950s-60’s Ione’s originals sold up to $1,000.
Not only a talented artist on canvas, water color and pencil sketches, Ione sculptured bronzes and illustrated five western books for her brother-Othor (Angus) MacLean.
Her love for the western life is illustrated throughout her work. Her favorite painting in oils have the advantage of being more durable. All of her paintings are available in Giclée prints, specialty gift items and note cards.
Her art is currently displayed at the family house log cabin in Atascadero, California.
She donated some art paintings, history items and an extensive gun collection to the Paso Robles Pioneer Museum.
She passed away on December 31, 1988 but her spirit left in all her prolific work will remain... forever.
