Ione MacLean Bowman, Authentic western artist
John Bowman, last of the real cowboys, her life model.
John was born in Missouri to George and Mary Bowman, his family later moved to California. John would start the wild horses about the age of 5 or 6. At a very young age, he struck out on his own. After numerous adventures, including surviving the “black plaque”, bringing only his saddle, he settled in North San Luis Obispo County.
Ione was delivered by her grandfather on their family ranch located between Carrisa Plains and Pozo. Her parents, John and Burma Still MacLean, named Ione after an island in Scotland, where her father originated
John a genuine cowboy, rode distinguished and proud. Handsomely rugged, glistening blue eyes, he looked as if he rode off the movie screen. While visiting a cowboy friend at a neighboring ranch, he first laid eyes on Ione. The attraction must have been their mutual charismatic charm and her natural elegance. John always said he was robbed of his youth - hint of his humorous character..
Ione was 22 and John was 36. They were married for 40 years
Both passed away on the Diamond I Ranch. John passed on May 31, 1974 and Ione on December 31, 1988.
John and Ione Bowman
First time the 1920-30 vintage art from Ione MacLean Bowman's personal collection offered to the public.
Historical pictorials of genuine western cowboy life were depicted in all of her paintings.
This site has some history of the family ranch but most of all, sharing her extensive art collection of wild life scenes, humorous art, bronzes, hand painted carvings, sketches and the illustration of western books.
A real tribute to her gift.
